Let aa and bb be nonzero real numbers such that a+ba+b and a3+b3a^3+b^3 are rational. A student gives the following proof that abab is rational.

  1. Write s=a+bs=a+b and t=a3+b3t=a^3+b^3. Then ss and tt are rational.
  2. Expanding s3s^3 gives s3=t+3abss^3=t+3abs.
  3. Since a≠0a\ne0 and b≠0b\ne0, we have s≠0s\ne0.
  4. Hence ab=(s3−t)/(3s)ab=(s^3-t)/(3s) is rational.
